Summary of Federigo's Falcon
Federigo's Falcon starts by listing the virtues of a young man, Federigo, who is renowned for prowess and courtliness. Falling in love with ths most beautiful lady in Florence, Monna Giovanna, Federigo spends all his money exorbitantly to endear himself to her. However, Monna Giovanna never deign a glimpse to Federigo untill she had no choice, but fulfull her son's will by visiting Federigo after the death of her husband. Federigo, of course, welcomes Monna Giovanna into his house, but soon realizes that he has nothing to feed her for dinner. Federigo slaughtered his precious falcon to make a good impression, which is what Monna Giovanna wants. After realizing the blunder they have done and Federigo is unable to comply her request, Monna Giovanna's son passes away. Monna Giovanna marries Federigo and together with her riches and Federigo's newfound sense, they live happily for the rest of their days.
Human Possibility
Boccaccio explores the human possibility for noble sacrifice in this story, where Federigo endears himself to Monna Giovanna by spending his wealth and slaughtering the falcon.
Frame Story
Frame Story is a literary technique when the narrator tells another story in the main story. Federigo’s Falcon shows the use of frame story in the beginning. A Queen tells one of the most beautiful tales from a noble man, Borghee Domenichi, where inside the tale is the love story between Federigo and Monna Giovanna. Another example of a frame story I know is Frankenstein by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley that tells a story of a young science student named Victor Frankenstein, who creates a grotesque but sentient creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment. Situational Irony
Situational irony happens when a character or reader expects one thing to happen, but something different happens. Federigo’s Falcon uses the technique of situational irony, and the attempt of using situational irony is the suggest about love. One plot is when Federigo expects to impress his lady, Monna Giovanna, with his wealth; as a matter of fact, Monna Giovanna is not impressed and when she does finally visit, he is too poor to feed him. This suggest that Federigo has spent all his property for Monna Giovanna, who only deigns to look back for Federigo when she is verging to death. Another plot is when Monna Giovanna finally visits, Federigo expects to impress his lady with the most sumptuous feast he could prepare, which is a falcon; however, getting falcon as a pet is actually the purpose of her visiting. This reveals about love that Federigo values Monna Giovanna to the extent that he even killed the most precious thing owns.
Courtly Love
Courtly love is medieval European literary conception of love that emphasized nobility to a married woman, which is used in Federigo’s Falcon because Federigo is a nobleman and yet still has feeling towards Monna Giovana in spite of her getting married. Such stories that use the concept of courtly love were massively produced during the Renaissance like. In addition, I have written a short story that consists the concepts of human possibility, situational irony, individual verses society that will be discussed in the fourth day of journey, and courtly love in modern times.
Discussion: The Beauty of Love or the Foolishness of love?
In my perspective, the actions of Federigo illustrate the foolishness of love because he never wakes up from his dreams. Federigo never considers his situation and will continue to do so if Monna Giovana does not marry him. After spending all his money without a restraint, his vain action does not gain a glimpse from Monna Giovana. However, Federigo still manages to sacrifice his last thing for his love. Besides the fact that his actions may potentially let Monna Giovana fells guilty, he is also now barely to survive.
